While we were enjoying our beers (tasty Widmir Hefeweizen), 80's music echoed off the jukebox, and E! had a documentary on the Village People playing on the television. An odd contrast.
However, the sunny weather makes for a hot house. Ugh! (I guess that just means I get to go outside!!!!)
Of course, now I'm fried and can't do any work. Not that there's any work to do.

You have to really keep up in San Francisco.... But I'm finding it pretty easy. It's odd how you can slip into sort of a driving trance. Keeping your eye on the road and letting your sub-conscious keep track of other drivers, pedestrians, etc.
Of course, the first few times I tried driving on my own, I got horribly turned around. In general, I know my way around the city. But when it comes to navigating specific routes, sometimes I get lost. The twisty roads in San Francisco fool you into thinking you can get to a specific point. But when you try it, you realize that there's a hill, or a one way street that prevents you. But it gets better.
Gonna hit the gym later, finally. It's been over a week, I think.

Maybe I just need to get out of the house.

[Pics removed. Whoops.]
Feeling sorta back to normal after the weekend. Gonna take it easy next weekend, I think. There's a Mass on Sunday. I think that may be the only social thing I do. I really want to go to the beach on Saturday or Sunday.... We'll see what the weather is like.

I'd do it again next year, but I think I'm gonna have to get more sleep before. I'm fried.
Off to bed!

As we were leaving, I went up to the DJ booth. I'm not a groupy or anything...but I like to let the DJs know that I appreciate their music. I gave her a thumbs up and said thank you. She said thanks, then asked me "do you know anyone who smokes pot?"
Hee.

Gads.
Out kinda late last night. Had yummy sushi and drinks at Blowfish in Potrero Hill. Very cool spot with trippy dance music and anime playing over the sushi bar. More cocktails out later....
Tonite is Lydia Prim at Impact. Should be fun.

So, we finally get an email today (four days late). The email says basically, "format it all pretty-like, but don't bother editing what I've written, since it's perfect." Meanwhile, the document is incomplete, his English usage is shit. I'm referred to in this email as "the writer."
Maybe I'm in the wrong job.

I finally have a draft document to work on from the Architect on this project. Oy, vey. Lots to do. I guess I finally get to exercise my English degree. Now where's my red pen?
I'm hoping that when I finish the partitioning to install linux that it goes away. (Avoidance as a maintenance plan. Love it!)
Now I'm baking chocolate chip cookies. Yum.

After teeth gnashing, hair pulling, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc., I think to check the PacBell System Status page. Of course, DSL is "impaired" in my area at that very moment. I knew then it was time to go to the gym.
I suppose I'm being productive by working on my website, and I did re-build my whole computer last night. And I am installing linux soon. And I am being paid by the company for all this stuff, even though I'm not really being terribly productive. But it doesn't feel good, particularly after reading all these startup sites, like Bryan Boyer and all the groovy people at Pyra.
Can I say how excited I am to have my own domain name? Wheee!
Reformatted the bloody computer, reinstalled all software. Tired. Very tired. Must sleep now.
On to linux! (Later, much later.)

This is as bad as my web cam fetish, which thankfully died a quick, painless death. Web cams are far more expensive. I don't really think I'd shell out 19.95/month for saucy writing.
Blah.
I seem to be spending a lot of time reading online, surfing, re-reading. Time to start interacting as well. Oh, and doing non-online things (like the gym) as well. Balance, balance.
Time for lunch. Filet-o-fish!
Monday, March 20, 2000
I'm a-guessin' that the gym is not in my future for tonite. I think a cocktail, laundry, and perhaps a little (more) web-work will be my destiny this evening.
Not that I haven't sat on my butt in front of my PC at work all freakin' day.
God, I need a real job.
My new email address will be john@continuity.nu
Keen.
I'm on my third or fourth cup of coffee so far. Yummy.

Went out last night to Universe for awhile to hear Jamie J. spin, and to pick up our new Universe VIP card. Was there for about an hour, then dashed to pick up Brian at the Slow Club. Quick costume change at his house, then off to Metropolis for more fun.
The party ended up being okay. We had a great time while there. There wasn't much of a crowd, but the people were fun and we had a blast dancing.
So, that's the end of that story. There's more, but it gets far, far too messy for this space. Suffice to say that all is well, no harm done.
Today, Jason, Brian and I drove to some beach south of Pacifica. Hiked down this *freakin' steep hill to a secluded bar of sand. The surf was very high and the wind was pretty cold. But the sun was warm, and we chilled out, tanned our white asses, listened to CDs, and talked. I can't believe I've lived 27 years without the beach being a regular part of my life.
When the wind picked up and the surf looked threatening, we hiked back up that hill and dragged ourselves home. I'm bushed. I'm thinking that an early bedtime might be in order.

Picked up some catalogs (2 pallets worth), waited around pointlessly, Burger King, off to Best Buy to look at digital cameras. Balked at paying $499 for one with "optical zoom," although I probably will only be taking closeup shots. Bought a Win 98 CD (which probably won't work because it's the "upgrade," and my machine came preinstalled with Win 98). Also bought the Red Hat Linux 6.1 distribution.
So, soon, the machine gets lobotomized, re-partitioned, and Win 98 in one partition and linux in the other. I'm very scared.
The DJ, St. Peter, who I had not heard before, was pretty much a cross between Phil B. and Neil Lewis. I'm getting a little tired of the San Francisco sound. So heavy.
Tomorrow's party should be better. Did a little shopping last weekend, so I have interesting things to wear. (Aren't you all shocked?)

On the walk back, I realized how great part the area off Market near the Embarcadero is. A nice change from the concrete canyon of Market Street near my office. At Mission, downtown opens up a bitthe sun was shining, lots of sidewalk seating, happy smiling crowds, and about 3.25 Starbucks per block. What the fuck? They are taking over the world.
At work, editing some documents. It amazes me what passes for corporate writing. I suppose technical people are known for their inability to write. I guess that's why I have a job, eh?
Dinner tonite at Chow on Church. Good Thai noodle-ish dish. Very spicy. And a Peroni. Yum.
I waited and waited, then just got fed up and moved.

The tech came back and fixed a couple of things. Not surprisingly, the problem was AOL. Hopefully, AOL 5.0 doesn't continually try to reassert itself and wipe out whatever settings the DSL connection needs. Gads.
The techs (who were quite nice, professional, and seemed to know what they were doing) had to run off to see another customer (who was screaming and yelling because they were late). So I'm left with a manual, a couple of phone numbers, and a prayer to get this thing resolved this evening.
They were as frustrated as I will probably be tonight. They had to hold for customer service, and didn't ever get through to a CSR. Yikes. But when it works, it should be pretty cool. Yay!
I'm seriously considering a digital camera. I think it would be very cool to be able to throw up pics quickly. And the instant gratification factor is very appealing. I'm the sort of person who can leave a roll of film in the camera for months. I think if I could see them, edit them (delete the crap I don't want) and post pics quickly, it would encourage me to use the camera more. Or maybe not.
Probably another expensive gadget to lug around.

The Houston's here was nothing more than a mediocre tourist spotslow service, marginal food. Yuck.
Off to bed. Tired.
Sunday, March 12, 2000
The Pyra folks put up mini-bios and job postings. They seem like hyper-cool people. Job prospect?
I'm really happy with the new site look. Finally.

Our esteemed proprietor, David K., just launched the Inner Circle. Pony up the bucks, because it's worth it. And Dave deserves it for his hard work.</SMUT>
I just have to say that TurboTax and the IRS e-file thingamabob *kick ass*. Did my taxes is 1 hour, filed them, a little paperwork and *bam* had my refund back in a week. That's pretty damn good. Wheeeeee.
I'm dogging work though. I think everyone should play hookie from work once in awhile.

I spent an hour last night disassembling a page from eBay (don't ask), then promptly lost it when my computer spontaneously rebooted. Way to go Win98.
The entire premise of this class was to learn how to implement the product. However, the class seems to be the only bit of information provided. Can you say "enormous consulting fees?"
Monday, March 06, 2000
This week, instead of "training," we are "practicing" what we learned in class last week. We are in teams of several people each. My team is made up of folks who are only marginally qualified. One business guy can't remember how to tie his shoes, much less what we're supposed to be doing.
Gads. Hopefully no one from work reads this. :o)

I love California. At Taco Bell for lunch, the manager of the restaurant (an Indian gentleman) misunderstood the order of a Spanish-speaking woman. They got in to a bit of a disagreement--the root of which was the language barrier.
Such an event probably could not have occurred in Arizona. I'm reveling in the irony.
Thursday, March 02, 2000
Perhaps this weekend a little fun might be had.
Dinking around with my site....this design thing is harder than I thought. Arrgh.
Wednesday, March 01, 2000
Fairly interesting, but the training class (as with most corporate training) is WAAAAY too long for me. I'm usually a member of the RTFM school of software education. Ho hum.
On the bright side, I feel fairly normal again after being deathly ill (OK, I exaggerate a *tiny* bit) for the last few days. Perhaps things will get back to normal in my life.... at least Jason hopes so.
continuity is the personal site of john logan, a thirtyish guy in phoenix, arizona.
