Just back from cocktails on Polk Street. Ugh. Definitely a different vibe than Castro. Stood around at this divy little bar called the Rendezvous.

While we were enjoying our beers (tasty Widmir Hefeweizen), 80's music echoed off the jukebox, and E! had a documentary on the Village People playing on the television. An odd contrast.

Boy oh, boy. It's a beautiful day in San Francisco. This is why I live in California. If only it were this beautiful year round.

However, the sunny weather makes for a hot house. Ugh! (I guess that just means I get to go outside!!!!)

Lunch out with co-workers at Palomino on the Embarcadero. Chez trendy-hip-business-lunch joint. Not bad salmon, and a tasty ale (Palomino Integrale) brewed by the Pyramid folks. Yum.

Of course, now I'm fried and can't do any work. Not that there's any work to do.

I'm getting more comfortable driving in the City. It's probably from necessity, but I'm finding myself getting more agressive as a driver. I've always been a pretty good driver—no accidents or tickets in the last 10 years or so.

You have to really keep up in San Francisco.... But I'm finding it pretty easy. It's odd how you can slip into sort of a driving trance. Keeping your eye on the road and letting your sub-conscious keep track of other drivers, pedestrians, etc.

Of course, the first few times I tried driving on my own, I got horribly turned around. In general, I know my way around the city. But when it comes to navigating specific routes, sometimes I get lost. The twisty roads in San Francisco fool you into thinking you can get to a specific point. But when you try it, you realize that there's a hill, or a one way street that prevents you. But it gets better.

Productive errands today: new slick haircut, cashed in a bunch of change, etc. etc. Not very exciting, but it's the little things that count, right?

Gonna hit the gym later, finally. It's been over a week, I think.

I'm feeling sorta blah right now, and I'm not sure why. I was snappy with Jason, and I'm just staring at my computer looking for something to read or do.

Maybe I just need to get out of the house.

No posts today so far. Maybe I'm not in a posting mood.

Feeling sorta back to normal after the weekend. Gonna take it easy next weekend, I think. There's a Mass on Sunday. I think that may be the only social thing I do. I really want to go to the beach on Saturday or Sunday.... We'll see what the weather is like.

Well, I'm exhausted. Back from the Academy of Friends event. On my feet working the door for 9 hours. The event was certainly fun. Lots of interesting (read: cute) people. The event starts out as cocktails and appetizers, and ends up with a circuit party. An interesting combo, since gay boys dancing in tuxes is fairly unusual.

I'd do it again next year, but I think I'm gonna have to get more sleep before. I'm fried.

Off to bed!

Boy oh boy. Out late last night. Lydia Prim rocked Impact. Her sound was high energy, happy house music. Later in the evening, she moved into a more progressive, trance sound. But she never let the energy slip. I love parties like that.

As we were leaving, I went up to the DJ booth. I'm not a groupy or anything...but I like to let the DJs know that I appreciate their music. I gave her a thumbs up and said thank you. She said thanks, then asked me "do you know anyone who smokes pot?"

Hee.

Out kinda late last night. Had yummy sushi and drinks at Blowfish in Potrero Hill. Very cool spot with trippy dance music and anime playing over the sushi bar. More cocktails out later....

I am so pissed off I can't even speak. I've been waiting for four days for this Architect to submit a document so that I can get it prepared for distribution by (hello!) tomorrow.

So, we finally get an email today (four days late). The email says basically, "format it all pretty-like, but don't bother editing what I've written, since it's perfect." Meanwhile, the document is incomplete, his English usage is shit. I'm referred to in this email as "the writer."

Maybe I'm in the wrong job.

Off to bed. The computer is nearly back to normal, I think. Except for the vaguely unsettling warning about something being wrong with the disk partition. I hope that doesn't mean I have to do this over again.

I'm hoping that when I finish the partitioning to install linux that it goes away. (Avoidance as a maintenance plan. Love it!)

Now I'm baking chocolate chip cookies. Yum.

Sometimes, I hate technology. This afternoon, I reinstalled Microsquish Money from CD. Immediately afterward, the DSL connection stopped working. So, of course, I suspect the Money installation (don't ask me why).

After teeth gnashing, hair pulling, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc., I think to check the PacBell System Status page. Of course, DSL is "impaired" in my area at that very moment. I knew then it was time to go to the gym.

So, the days go on and on and on and on.

I suppose I'm being productive by working on my website, and I did re-build my whole computer last night. And I am installing linux soon. And I am being paid by the company for all this stuff, even though I'm not really being terribly productive. But it doesn't feel good, particularly after reading all these startup sites, like Bryan Boyer and all the groovy people at Pyra.

Can I say how excited I am to have my own domain name? Wheee!

I gotta start working. This non-work crap is really getting on my nerves. I'm surfing looking for more weblogs to read. As if 10 or 12 wasn't enough.

This is as bad as my web cam fetish, which thankfully died a quick, painless death. Web cams are far more expensive. I don't really think I'd shell out 19.95/month for saucy writing.

Blah.

It seems I don't get around to making a post to this darn thing until after lunch. Too much surfing to do before then.

I seem to be spending a lot of time reading online, surfing, re-reading. Time to start interacting as well. Oh, and doing non-online things (like the gym) as well. Balance, balance.

Time for lunch. Filet-o-fish!

Today was fun, although I'm exhausted. I don't actually think I've been to bed yet.

Went out last night to Universe for awhile to hear Jamie J. spin, and to pick up our new Universe VIP card. Was there for about an hour, then dashed to pick up Brian at the Slow Club. Quick costume change at his house, then off to Metropolis for more fun.

The party ended up being okay. We had a great time while there. There wasn't much of a crowd, but the people were fun and we had a blast dancing.

So, that's the end of that story. There's more, but it gets far, far too messy for this space. Suffice to say that all is well, no harm done.

Today, Jason, Brian and I drove to some beach south of Pacifica. Hiked down this *freakin' steep hill to a secluded bar of sand. The surf was very high and the wind was pretty cold. But the sun was warm, and we chilled out, tanned our white asses, listened to CDs, and talked. I can't believe I've lived 27 years without the beach being a regular part of my life.

When the wind picked up and the surf looked threatening, we hiked back up that hill and dragged ourselves home. I'm bushed. I'm thinking that an early bedtime might be in order.

Today was less than inspiring. The weather was beautiful. Jason and I ended up in his work truck most of the time. Surely one of the most uncomfortable vehicles ever created by man.

Picked up some catalogs (2 pallets worth), waited around pointlessly, Burger King, off to Best Buy to look at digital cameras. Balked at paying $499 for one with "optical zoom," although I probably will only be taking closeup shots. Bought a Win 98 CD (which probably won't work because it's the "upgrade," and my machine came preinstalled with Win 98). Also bought the Red Hat Linux 6.1 distribution.

So, soon, the machine gets lobotomized, re-partitioned, and Win 98 in one partition and linux in the other. I'm very scared.

PSN must have something mirrored to www.psn.net or something. Whenever I use that address, no site. But when I use just psn.net, I get the current pages. I'm confused, but whatever.

I'm not understanding this. When I publish a new page, it won't come up after I reload. PSN doesn't have a staging server that I know of. I wonder if I'm not setting permissions correctly or something.

This party sucked. Sparse crowd, low energy. I got there late. Jason and I didn't really hook up after work, and we wound up in different mental spaces. It was all-in-all a crappy evening. I came home early and surfed—which is what I'm doing now!

The DJ, St. Peter, who I had not heard before, was pretty much a cross between Phil B. and Neil Lewis. I'm getting a little tired of the San Francisco sound. So heavy.

Tomorrow's party should be better. Did a little shopping last weekend, so I have interesting things to wear. (Aren't you all shocked?)

Nice little walk at lunch down to the Post Office on Steuart Street. Cool building. The building has been renovated, but the old lobby still has lots of its deco accents. Yummy lunch at Yank Sing—spring rolls, potstickers, an odd sort of chicken salad with a sinus clearing mustard dressing. Whoowee.

On the walk back, I realized how great part the area off Market near the Embarcadero is. A nice change from the concrete canyon of Market Street near my office. At Mission, downtown opens up a bit—the sun was shining, lots of sidewalk seating, happy smiling crowds, and about 3.25 Starbucks per block. What the fuck? They are taking over the world.

Arrgh. The hell begins. PacBell techs were at my house this morning for two hours installing a DSL connection. After two techs, two hours, two modems, and a 20 minute phone call--no DSL. Something about somethingerother not being configured correctly at PacBell. Surprise!

The techs (who were quite nice, professional, and seemed to know what they were doing) had to run off to see another customer (who was screaming and yelling because they were late). So I'm left with a manual, a couple of phone numbers, and a prayer to get this thing resolved this evening.

They were as frustrated as I will probably be tonight. They had to hold for customer service, and didn't ever get through to a CSR. Yikes. But when it works, it should be pretty cool. Yay!

Groovy (to me, and possibly to you, if you know me or are a voyeur who loves randomness) new pics posted.

I'm seriously considering a digital camera. I think it would be very cool to be able to throw up pics quickly. And the instant gratification factor is very appealing. I'm the sort of person who can leave a roll of film in the camera for months. I think if I could see them, edit them (delete the crap I don't want) and post pics quickly, it would encourage me to use the camera more. Or maybe not.

Probably another expensive gadget to lug around.

Dinner tonite with Niel, Paul and Jason at Houston's on the Embarcadero. Dreadful. I was so disappointed. The Houston's in Phoenix is top-notch, even though it is a chain. My favorite casual restaurant...the place we always ended up by default when we couldn't decide where to eat. It was my neighborhood burger joint (so to speak) in Arizona.

The Houston's here was nothing more than a mediocre tourist spot—slow service, marginal food. Yuck.

Off to bed. Tired.

So, I haven't been very good about working on my web site. I desperately want to update the design of the site, but I'm too lazy to work up something good. Or, alternatively, I think I may be somewhat depressed over my apparent lack of HTML skill.

I spent an hour last night disassembling a page from eBay (don't ask), then promptly lost it when my computer spontaneously rebooted. Way to go Win98.

More practicing. This is interminable. The product is pretty much documentation-free. How does a company put together a piece of software, market it, get people to pay enormous licensing fees, then provide very little documentation about how the product is installed and configured.

The entire premise of this class was to learn how to implement the product. However, the class seems to be the only bit of information provided. Can you say "enormous consulting fees?"

More of the same. In San Jose yet again.

This week, instead of "training," we are "practicing" what we learned in class last week. We are in teams of several people each. My team is made up of folks who are only marginally qualified. One business guy can't remember how to tie his shoes, much less what we're supposed to be doing.

In San Jose, again.

I love California. At Taco Bell for lunch, the manager of the restaurant (an Indian gentleman) misunderstood the order of a Spanish-speaking woman. They got in to a bit of a disagreement--the root of which was the language barrier.

Such an event probably could not have occurred in Arizona. I'm reveling in the irony.

So I've been trapped in San Jose for the last couple of days, at a training class for a fairly wonky (for corporate software) Java application that my company will be expected to support.

Fairly interesting, but the training class (as with most corporate training) is WAAAAY too long for me. I'm usually a member of the RTFM school of software education. Ho hum.

On the bright side, I feel fairly normal again after being deathly ill (OK, I exaggerate a *tiny* bit) for the last few days. Perhaps things will get back to normal in my life.... at least Jason hopes so.
