Today was my last official day "in the office." As of Monday, I'm a work-at-home sort of boy. Which probably means just about the same amount of surfing...I just don't have to worry about reading my weblog list occasionally.
I'm not sure exactly how long this deal will last, but I'm going to make the most of it while I can.
Now, for the weekend.... anybody doing anything fun?

I wish the fellow who owns logan.org would answer my email. I don't suppose I'll be able to register this domain when it expires, but I can hope. And, for the record, I'm not related to this guy.
So starting next week, I get to work at home. Yay.

Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly...
How disappointing.
The Boy Scouts were an integral part of growing up for me. I didn't play sports or participate much in extracurricular school events, but I was very active in Scouting. I earned my Eagle Scout award and accepted it beside several of my best friends. I worked at Scouting summer camps and participated in some amazing activities that are still highlights of my life.

So we were warned today about browsing "sites of a sexually explicit nature" using our work PCs. Which probably means that someone saw me hitting slapmyass.org and nightcharm.com in the proxy server logs and freaked out. Grrr. I guess I'll have to leave some of my reading for home....even though I was only reading the articles. Really!

Pleasuredome last night was stellar. Neil Lewis played a spectacular set in the backroom, and we danced until 3:30. Club Townsend only opens the backroom for special events (like Pride weekend), so it's a treat to dance there. The sound system in the backroom is brilliantfar better than the over-amped front. They crank the speakers in the front to painfully loud levels, but the back is distortion-free.
I retract all the evil things I've said about Neil Lewis: his set last night was full of fun new music. The last few times I've heard him spin, it's been like hearing a CDthe same tired songs with the same tired mixes. Even his set at the White Party was pretty dull. But Neil must have found a bunch of new music, because he made up for it last night. I had a smile on my face all night long (and it wasn't because of this, believe it or not). This morning, I collapsed into bed, pleasantly exhausted.

Ahhhhh! Pride is not yet over. Off we go to Pleasuredome, a Sunday night staple for dancing in SF. Yikes. There will be nothing resembling coherent thought tomorrow.
Oh, and Time4Pride was outstanding. DJ Buc served up a set full of happiness and fun. It was more than enough to overcome the darkness that is 715 Harrison (the venue).

Well, we survived gay pride in San Francisco. I can't say I was terribly impressed. It was fun to hear Olive and Martha Wash, although Martha's pretty overworked as a gay disco diva. Honestly, how long can she work "It's Raining Men?" [Pink lightening bolts will probably strike me momentarily.] We missed Jimmy Sommerville, unfortunately, because it was time to go.
ReUNION at City Hall last night was interesting, but not spectacular. It was impressive to see such a party take place in the halls of government. At one point, when we were looking for the VIP Lounge (and free cocktails) we took the elevator up to the second floor. We quickly realized that the upstairs wasn't open yet and turned around, just in time to get on the same elevator as Hizzoner Willie Brown. Eeep. Power to the people.
But despite the great setting, the party never really got going for us. We left about 11:30 and went home to meet some friends from Sacramento. We the proceeded to find somewhat trashier things to do with the rest of our weekend.
More dancing tonight at Time2. My, aren't we deplorable circuit fags. (Sorry Richard.) Thank god we have tomorrow off. I don't think I could take much more pride!

Guests coming tonight, so I probably ought to pick up the house. Which is my least favorite activity. But I don't want people thinking that we're total slobs.... The truth hurts.
Coffee, when it's really bad, is really bad.

I leave early on a Friday afternoon to do a little shopping. So, of course, after a day of very little happening, my boss mysteriously finds "something" for me to do five minutes after I walk out the door. Odd, no?
Oh, and I got the promotion/new job. Whoo.

Jason and I are trying to decide how much we will participate in the festivities this weekend. I'm pretty apathetic about most of the events. I'm not sure I want to see the parade, although it would be a first for me. I'm guessing the spectacle will be just a bit much.
We're supposed to go to ReUNION at City Hall Saturday night. Right now that's up in the air as well. Too many things that need doing. Ugh.

Being petty just demonstrates your limited point of view. Unless, of course, you're really good at it.

Well. Well, well, well.
Things may get even more interesting on the work front. The Information Architect job I've been coveting may just happen faster than I had thought. And I may still get to move to Phoenix. Wow. I would just have to be travelling back and forth from Austin to Phoenix to San Francisco. Which wouldn't be all bad, I think.

Imagine my surprise to find an Amazon.com box on my doorstep last night. Certain favorite Londoners decided that I should try reading Martin Amis once again, for my own good, I'm sure.
The Internet is an amazing thing. A thoughtful gift sent from across the ocean that snapped me out of a foul mood. Love it.

I surf too much. No surprise there.
It's been so long since I've had real tasks to do at work that I find myself being distracted by all the surfing that needs to be done. Hrmph. I'm gonna need to retrain myself to get back on the ol' work bandwagon when I start my new job.

On a suggestion cribbed from Taylor, I'm reading Understanding Comics. I'm not a comic book nut, but I do enjoy them. McCloud's explanations remind me a lot of Bill Watterson's description of his work and the "integrity" behind Calvin and Hobbes. McCloud also examines some of the differences between Western and Eastern comics. Looking at them from a cultural frame of reference explains a lot.... See? Learn something new.
Uh. Kinda tired today. The weekend wore me out. A few more weekends like that and my life will completely implode. The details, of course, I'd better keep to myself.
Suffice to say that I've probably reached my theoretical maximum on a lot of recreational activities. Limits. Limits. I know I have some around here somewhere.

Father's Day, isn't it? I should just dig up my post about Mother's Day and repost it. The thoughts are the same, and I didn't send Dad a card. Grrr. My father and I aren't terribly close. We talk on the holidays, and maybe one or two other times each year. Our calls and cards are rote now, ridiculously so. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
If I were to steal Chad's gym blog idea, I wonder if it would encourage me to go more often. Hmmm.
It's all hidden away now. The temptation is gone. I hope.

An afternoon in the Fillmore, a trip to Lands End, and a walk down Barbary Lane. Oh, and a new journal entry to tie it all together.
In an effort to improve the Human Contact Quotient for this site, I added a contact page. There you will find several options for harassing me. Beep me on AIM, or practice your heavy breathing on my uReach voicemail. Fun.

On the slide into the weekend. Despite the fact that I felt busy busy busy today, I don't have much to show for it. I tinkered with the site a bit today. Next up: Real work!
And now, it's time for a drink or two and some random socialization. Whee.

Photographic Evidence
Certain members of this household hinted that I should update the View. So I did.
Three pictures from Memorial Day at the Russian River, camping at Fife's. Much merriment was made and copious fun was had. Four pictures from the morning that kicked off the California AIDS Ride. A friend did the ride this year and we went to see him off. And, for good measure, a random Jason pic.
No artsy, namby-pamby nature photos this time. Judging from the access logs, it's obvious what gets the clicks: skin! No plants or oceans in this edition, only people.
Drop me a note with any comments, complaints, suggestions, or ridicule you may have.

Experience: the Difference
Brian, a friend I admire for his literary capacity (among other wonderful qualities), offers this bit:
This speaks to a boatload of conversations and thoughts I've been having about the weblogging thang lately. I'm still formulating my thoughts on this topic. It will probably turn into a journal entry at some point....
But this will do for now.

"We live in the age of mass loquacity. We are all writing it or at any rate talking it: the memoir, the apologia, the cv, the cri de coeur. Nothing, for now, can compete with experienceso unanswerably authentic, and so liberally and democratically dispensed."
--Martin Amis, Experience

A headset for your cellular phone seems a little redundant when you hold the phone in one hand and the little microphone in the other, as I see so many insufferable business-types doing on the street.
No, I don't particularly want to stay late at work to hear the executive staff's pitch to the investors. I don't I don't I don't.
Whoohoo! The breeze is back! Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

Too. Damn. Hot.
I got tired of waiting for Epinions to add the restaurant Blue to its database, so I wrote an epinion on it anyway. Here you go.
Oh, and I officially quit my job today.
This is just a warm up in preparation for our move back to Phoenix. You want hot? We'll give ya hot.
I think I read about half.com somewhere, sometime. But I've never been to the site. Very cool concept. Hopefully eBay doesn't screw with it. [Stole this from Jay, who still owes me email.]

Hmmm. I must be boring today. Or bored.
Actually, I had a very interesting email conversation with Brian about personal publishing, weblogging, web-biography, and the heinous practice of *gasp* cut-and-paste email. Who knew Brian could be so dastardly?
The conversation ended with a reference to Derrida. I find that tends to end most conversations rather quickly.
We will be starting our newest online project "Deconstructing Weblogs" in the next few days. Or not, actually. I think I'll follow the Kottke rule and not talk about weblogs here anymore.

Well, certain members of the household have started packing. I packed one (count 'em) one box. Jason has started tearing up the garage and stuffing it into boxes. No mean feat, since he's lived here for 5 years and is a bit of a packrat.
I, on the other hand, have only recently unpacked my life. I think I'll have a pretty easy time with my crap. Most of it is still in the boxes from the last move. Nevertheless, this is the part I hate the most. Well, next to the part where we get to cram it all in the truck. Ick.

OK. I was gonna post a picture that I probably shouldn't. So I won't. Off to the gym.
Ostensibly, I work for a technology company. So why do I continually get "forms" from within the company that are just Word documents meant to be printed and filled out by hand? Wierd, and not very efficient.
Merciful heavens, there are lots of interesting things going on. Life is gonna be crazy and chaotic for the next 30 days or so.
Just warning you now, in case I don't get the chance later.

Not in a posting mood today. Yesterday we had a great breakfast at Miss Millie's in Noe Valley, then headed to the East Bay for a barbecue. Lots of vodka. I mean lots of vodka.
Jason went out to see Cyndi Lauper last night at Universe, but I was bushed. I stayed in. I don't know how he does it... especially since we'd had entirely too much fun, on many many levels.
Jason's doing a Pride Ride today: a motorcycle ride around the city. I'm joining him later for the beer bust at the Eagle. Whoohoo. More beer.

Palesky, again, makes me jealous with its beauty. Just when I thought you had to have lots of black on your site to be arty and mysterious.

Just a wee bit hung over today. One too many beers out last night. We checked out the new and improved Badlands last night in the Castro.
The floorplan is the same, but gone is the the gritty, backroomish character of its previous incarnation. The place is all brushed aluminum, flowers, disco lights and video screens. Remarkably LA (or what I imagine LA to be) for SF.

Steve is writing about some pretty tough stuff. I've been a smalltown boy as well, although I abandoned that just as soon as I could.
Best Buy is not one of my favorite places, even though I shop there entirely too much (and have the credit card bill to prove it). Chris apparently agrees: MegaBuy!

It's stopped raining. And the flags are still flying. And I've had enough coffee to kill a small farm animal. I think it's time to go home.
You see some pretty interesting things from the second floor, overlooking 1st and Market. People are getting pretty aggressive in fighting with drivers who don't respect the pedestrian right-of-way. In a pitched battle, I suppose we know who would win. I'm going to start carrying rocks for those moments when drivers decide they have to go first, or forget what the little red light means.
Of Rainbows and Streetlamps
As a symbol, it's been a little overworked, sure. But there are now rainbow flags flying from the streetlamps up and down Market Street. Pretty cool, when you think about it.

Which means very little surfing and/or posting. Rats.

Web Journal Addiction, Part II:
David reminds me that I spend entirely too much of my free time on his site as well, the deliciously stylish Nightcharm. Between Brock's steamy journal and David's own weblogish musings, there's more than enough to keep my hormone levels up. [Fair Warning: there's nekkidity of the homo sort therein...]
And I'm duly chastened, Jonno, you hunky thing you.

Jason, being the good person that he is, just went off to the gym. Because I am a bad person, I'm sitting here in front of the computer. Sigh.
In a fit of boredom, I wrote an Epinion on the Metro, a Chinese restaurant and/or bar in the Castro.
I know this is a topic of some contention, but I really dislike links that pop open a new browser window without my say-so. I usually surf with many windows open, and frequently a new link that I click will clobber something that I'm doing in another window. Grrr.
And I have the little JavaScript doohickey that fixes the problem, but when you "Back" to the offending page, the links are reset to their previously poppy selves.
Just had to rant a little there. Thanks.

What next...decimalization?
I got my first new $10 bill yesterday, which I just spent on my Briazz tuna sandwich and Tim's Cascade style Salt and Vinegar potato chips for lunch. (The combo is fast becoming my usual lunchtime staplefacinating, no?)
It's odd to get your change and examine a new bill with vague facination. New $5's and $10's, new coins. What's with all this new money?
I blame Canada.
Of course, I'm disappointed that the Mint (or rather the Bureau of Engraving and Printing) has no plans to replace the $1 bill. The inconsistency between the designs will drive me mad. (I'm funny that way.) So I guess we all just have to get a clue and start using (instead of collecting) the $1 coins....

Sparky's not the only web journal addict. Jason is about ready to lose his mind because I'm reading so many journals and weblogs on a regular basis. Some I read out of obligation or habit. Most because they are funny, charming, and/or hunky. Some because they challenge me and my squarely American homo sensibilities. Some because they always have insightful things to say, and believe in what they do. And a few I read just for some quirky, intelligent randomness.
And the beefier the better. [Oh, that statement works on so many levels, doesn't it?] There's nothing more disappointing to see that SpyOnIt has flagged a page as updated, only to find one dinky little line of text, or a link that everyone blogged a month ago. Fickle is as fickle does....

Absolutely kick ass night out dancing at Mass tonite. Phil B. was on top of his game. We both had a great time.
It probably helped that we haven't been out dancing for a month. A little variety never hurts. I'm looking forward to going out in Phoenix again. Lately they've booked quite a few popular DJ's and had some great parties, according to the Phoenix boys. Very cool.
New favorite dancefloor tune: Toca's Miracle, a killer track mixing Fragma's "floaty" Toca Me and Coco's I Need A Miracle. Whooo.

I would have said hello, Derek, but I thought it rude to shout after you. You seemed busy at the time, with a very cute and friendly friend. I caught a glimpse of a {fray} teeshirt, your cute smile, and then you were down the block.
Next time. All in fun, right? Right?
Next time. All in fun, right? Right?
Purchased David Sedaris' new book on Friday. I was reduced to tears (the laughing kind) while reading his essay, "The Youth in Asia." The essay is about various pets he and his family owned, and their peculiarities. Please don't think I'm a sicko, but I lost it on this passage, about having to put his aging cat to sleep:
On a related note, Brock (the massage therapist) had an adorable grey longhair cat. Not surprisingly, his name was Smokey. While Jason was getting his massage, Smokey climbed up into my lap, curled up and went to sleep. When it was my turn, he flipped over and promptly bit me.
"A week after putting her to sleep, I received Neil's ashes in a forest green can. She'd never expressed any great interest in the outdoors, so I scattered her remains on the carpet and then vacuumed her back up."

Jason and I both got massages today from a fellow named Brock. Absolutely wonderful. I feel great. It didn't hurt that he was easy on the eyes as well.... There's more to the story, but ya hafta ask. (Get your mind outta the gutter!)

Had a Powazek sighting in the Castro today. He is too a rockstar. Despite his protests to the contrary. ;o)
Jason bought a bootleg DJ CD (OK, slap me on the wrist) called Heavy Rotation 2 that just rocks. Great mixes of lotsa favorite club tunes: Sonique, Anggun, Donna Summer. I'm a big fag.
Grrr. I reorganized my own Jump page (my bookmarks) and now I can't find anything. I hate it when I do that. The perils of being organized.
How you phrase a question makes all the difference sometimes.
I'm as frustrated with Dr. Laura as the next homo, but I'm really, really tired of seeing that "Letter to Dr. Laura" email that everyone seems to be linking, posting, or what have you.

Woo! Email from Phoenix friends. Love that.
No plans for this weekend. Yay. Okay, maybe a few teeny plans. Yes friends, that was me posting about how little of a life I truly have. Love that.
Oh, and I'm still employed.
