Mmmmmm. New Susan Morabito CD: Ocean Drive.

Now I get to be among the people complaining about surfing at 56K again. Grrrr. Time to reorder DSL. I love moving. Yay.

Actually, the move hasn't been all that bad, really. There was some drama, but that needs a journal entry. Apart from the piles of boxes, life is good. Had a brief visit to my new place of work today.... saw my office, got my computer and phone, etc. All phone lines are connected and working, so I feel like a real human now....

Jason and I kept looking at each other and smiling as we walked around our new house. We're giddy with excitement. And life already seems easier here. Apart from the 100+ degree heat, that is. Jason is back in the City for a week finishing up. I don't envy him. Real work for me tomorrow. Whoo.

Sigh. I missed the Dore Alley Fair yesterday. Rats.

We're here. In one piece, mostly. Only a little drama on the way down. The house is even cooler than I remembered. Oh, and it's hot here. More later.

New favorite song of the moment: Follow Me by Lange

So, um. I'm done. The computer is being torn apart. The next sound you hear will be live from Phoenix. I'll be half dead, but whatever. Go out and do something naughty for me this weekend. I'll be driving, sleeping, and/or kvetching. Cheers.

Ooooh, brother. I am so tired of political convention babble already. One of the convention planners/coordinators was on NPR today sounding like a brainwashed clone, obviously reading from a rah-rah George W. Bush for President script. It sounded like so much crap. Please, God, don't let Dubya win. I'm not sure I can handle four years of this. Not that Bore is much better.

I've now talked to eight different people at Pacific Bell, been transferred at least ten times, and no one can seem to figure out who or how to cancel my phone service. It isn't that hard, people.

Pacific Bell: Proving that when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

Some people can't get DSL installed. I can't get it disconnected. Grrrrrrr.

The house is getting that hollow, empty feeling as we slowly shift the crap out the door and/or into boxes. Tonight is our last night in San Francisco.

Packing packing packing. We're at that point where we have to start packing things that are actually useful. Like dishes, the bathroom. Fun. Paper plates and take out for the rest of the week.

This is too good not to steal from Jason. Barbie's new DJ pal, Blaine. [From Kottke. Best quote of the day: "Unfortunately for Barbie, Blaine is always hopped up on coke and is probably more interested in Ken anyway."]

Hmmm. Taylor's got the first instance that I've seen of... ta-da! colored scrollbars! (MSIE 5.5) I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Nick Bracegirdle is a genius. If you haven't heard Chicane's Behind the Sun, go forth and purchase. (It's not just dance music, which is hard to believe coming from me, I know.) Looks like it's still just an import from the UK right now, but the US release should be out soon. The album has the brilliant "Saltwater" with vocals by Maire Brennan of Clannad, and the outstanding "Don't Give Up," with Bryan Adams.

A rational response to Nielsen's latest, from Mr. Kottke. Jakob is a bit overbearing in his "proclamations," but he's proven himself to be right on more than one occasion. And insulting the messenger is rarely an effective argument.

Yikes. This is scary. I was just thinking about this the other day, wondering if a Concorde had ever been involved in an accident.

Yesterday we stumbled home from Universe at 6am, changed clothes, then went to San Gregorio beach for a few hours. It was overcast and cloudy, but relaxing.

On Saturday night, our going away party was brilliant. Niel and Mark outdid themselves. We had a reasonable crowd, and there were no embarrassing moments that I remember. Apparently I told at least one cute boy to take his clothes off, but I don't remember that, so I take no responsibility.

And there were no tears. Not many, anyway.

At about 11, we headed to Universe for the rest of the evening. A great night out dancing. The music was typically Universish, which means lots of jungle and/or drum and bass. Ordinarily not my cup of tea, but the lights were perfectly in tune with the music, and we were in a good mood. I spent most of the night in a bit of a hole, if you know what I mean. I was wiped out yesterday. I slept for 15 hours last night. Sheesh.

Lots of pictures. I'll try to assemble a picture page soon.

Pre-moving yard sale today. A lotta work for not much dough, unfortunately. We sold some stuff for a couple of friends, and they made more than we did.

Going away party tonight, hosted by our dapper friends Mark and Niel. Should be interesting. Should be too froufrou for words. Unfortunately, we're competing with a few other events this weekend. (Not that our going away party should be considered "an event," really.) Many friends are out of town for San Diego Pride and/or the Lazy Bear Weekend at the Russian River. Alas.

What is with all the self promotion these days? Teeshirts? Mugs? Sheesh.

I can sorta understand a site like MetaFilter offering teeshirts and letting Matt pocket the profit to support the site. But letting your good name be used as advertisement to contribute to the teeshirt/mug purveyor's profit? I'm not sure I understand that part completely.

Of course, it's probably just oh-so-cool and I'm missing out. Where do I sign up?

Employment. In exchange for giving up 40+ hours of your life each week, a company has only a few obligations in my book. One of which is getting your paycheck to you on time. As you can guess, mine did not this week—despite the fact that I have direct deposit. How complicated can this be?

Updated the View (that thingy to your left there) with some new pictures from our trip last weekend to Phoenix. Birthdays, pool toys, and new houses. Older pictures have moved on to the Review.

I've been burning through books like mad lately. While in Phoenix, I finished Alas, Babylon, a very-cold-war-post-thermonuclear-obliteration book. It's hard to comprehend that the threat of nuclear war was much more pervasive than today. Sure there are many other things to worry about, but most people aren't pondering how to build a fallout shelter in the back yard. This book is good, if somewhat dated.

Finished Antarctica, by Kim Stanley Robinson last night. I enjoyed his Mars books immensely (Red, Green, Blue). This book was technically excellent, with lots of great detail on Antarctica, but I felt the plot was a little weak. It was snow for snow's sake, sorta.

Next up: Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio and Truman Capote's In Cold Blood.

I'm having some strange deja vu here. I keep feeling like I'm in Phoenix, even though I'm in San Francisco now. I have my web pages set to San Francisco info, and I keep glancing at it and thinking "that's not right..." Wierd.

Okay, I'm finally back and I feel like posting. Arizona was sooo much fun. It was also exhausting. But we found success and happiness. I nailed down the job thang, and we got the house! I'm so excited about this house I can't stand it.

Charming 1920's English cottage.

The house is a 1920's English cottage-style home in the downtown part of the city, near a great park, and literally a block from the public library. It was just rennovated, and has wood floors throughout, fireplace, a big yard. It's outstanding. This house was the only place that Jason and I looked at that we were absolutely in love with.

In a way I'm a little disappointed that we won't have to fix up an older place, but there will still be plenty of things we could do to this house. (First up: a pool!)

More later. I'll try to sort out some of the pics to update the View as well.

I usurped Chad and Joe's computer for a few minutes. I'm exhausted from househunting yesterday and Friday. I wouldn't make it as a realtor. All that driving around, peering into windows, weighing hardwood floors against the gas stove against pitifully stained carpet.

We found a house that we absolutely love yesterday. Unfortunately it is "For Sale or Lease," but rather more for sale than lease. We're not exactly in a position to plunk down a hunk of cash for a house right now, but soon. I'm hoping the guy will rent the house to us with the understanding that we would probably buy it very soon. We'll see. I want to leave Phoenix this weekend with at least one thing certain, since nothing else is!

Off to Phoenix this weekend, where it's officially fucking hot. Hopefully we'll be able to find a place to live this weekend. That's the idea, anyway.

Having your (rental) house sold while you are still living in it is a very frustrating thing. Especially if you are trying to work at home. You get to have strangers tramp through your house looking critically at everything. Ugh. One nice thing about the tight housing market in the Bay Area is that this won't go on for very long....

Sore feet? Check. Ears ringing? Check. Mild dehydration? Check. Unrecognizable hand stamps? Check. It must be the end of another clubbing weekend in San Francisco. Last night was a semi-regular jaunt to Universe. Lotsa boys, way too hot, and only so-so music. But we had fun nonetheless. Jason's rumbling about wanting to go to Pleasuredome tonite, but I'm not sure I can manage that.

Bored yet? Housecleaning today, prepping for a tour on Tuesday. Bleah. If we're really, really good, perhaps we can go to the beach again today.

Hi yourself! I hope you had a good weekend. I kept looking around for the rest of the weekend, thinking you'd show up at one of the clubs (with me, where else?). Ah well. Next time.

Miscellaneous rambling...
Someday I'll get around to updating the photos in the View. Perhaps a pic or two of our house in disarray, moving boxes piled up to our ears. Bleah. I've packed most of the miscellany already. This is all I have to say: We have a lot of shit.

Fortunately, we're cheating a bit and shipping a bunch of boxes to Phoenix ahead of time. The perks of marrying a transportation diva.

Our house went on the MLS yesterday. At 7:30am we had our first drive-by: a tired couple with a checklist of houses fresh off the printer. I guess we need to keep the house cleaner now.

Toying with a new re-design. If I get bored today, maybe I'll polish it up a bit. But first, I'm going shopping. I have a brand new plutonium credit card and Mr. S is calling my name.... Anybody wanna get into trouble?

Recent hi-techish purchase: Siemens Gigaset 2410 cordless phone, which is pretty much the sexiest cordless phone I've ever seen. No antenna, digital sound that's crystal clear. Looks kinda like a largish digital phone. Very cool.

I agree with Jay. Photoshop is far too complex for most things. Paint Shop Pro is reasonably complete in its set of tools, and even has quite a few filters included. It's much easier to learn as well. The only disappointing thing is that Photoshop is the standard tool, and experience with it is pretty much required to get any sort of design job.

I think we should organize a field trip, kidnap Steve, and drop him off at the dark, seedy boy venue of his choice (or, perhaps, our choice...). He's getting me all worked up with this horny guy-Tom of Finland talk.

Happy Fireworks Day!

Yesterday was a total waste. I slept for all but about 4 hours. Another Mass on Sunday, then (somewhat imprudently) we dashed off to Pleasuredome. Quite fun, but distressingly hot. We were exhausted and oh-so-dehydrated by the end of the evening/morning. So there was much sleeping on the couch yesterday.

Today hasn't been much better, I'm afraid. I can't even muster the energy to surf! Back to work tomorrow. Boooo.

So, Chicken Run wasn't all that. The group seemed to enjoy it, but I thought most of it was a bit forced. The best moments were the language gags and the two rats, although that schtick has been done done done. Plus, couldja squeeze in any more Ab Fab voices? Bubble, Saffy.... I'm sure there were others.

A tad dark for a kids' movie, tho. The ax scenes would have given me nightmares as a kid. And I'm not sure how to feel about all the heavy-handed WWII/holocaust/concentration camp stuff. Probably just me being overly sensitive and/or pseudo-PC.... Yeah, that must be it.
