I hate Hate HATE the phone company, in general. MCI in particular. Which is why I just switched to AT&T. I probably just fucked myself even more, but I'm tired of the piss-poor service from the drones at MCI. Good riddance. Hello, drones at AT&T!
New 17 inch monitor at the office. Well, new to me. The monitor is nearing the end of its useful life, and is very, very dark. Blogger looks black. My site is barely readable.
I'm now waiting patiently for another employee to leave on Friday so I can steal his monitor. Survival of the sneakiest.

The pictures are getting a little stale. Might be time for some new ones. Perhaps this weekend, being Labor Day and all, there might be a few new pictures to post.

The Industry Standard has a dot-com layoff tracker. That's just wrong on so many levels.
It's rainy here in Phoenix. I think the gawd-awful heat may have broken, finally. It's actually been great here. Phoenix really is a beautiful place; you just have to adjust your perspective occasionally.

(More boring domesticity) We had a good weekend. Shopping yesterday. Shrubberies were purchased for inside the house. On a lark, we drove up to the furniture stores on Bell Road for a look. Ended up buying a new sofa for the living room. The house is feeling very comfortable now.
Made our travel arrangements for Folsom Street Fair weekend. I can't wait! Should be quite fun. Have to buy the party tickets and figure out how to come up with the cash for the rest of the weekend.
Next weekend is Labor Day. Yikes. Where has the summer gone?

The only thing living at subculture.nu currently is a little project that Brian and I have been working on lately. A page for yammering about books we've read: Bibliograph. Beats pulling random books off the shelf at Borders.
Everyone is up and changing domains these days. Tom now lives at plasticbag.org, and Jay is now semistatic. I guess I need to figure out what to do with subculture.nu.
Started the day as per usual: a pot of coffee and an egg or two. Bill stopped by for coffee talk. We then proceeded to spend the rest of the day doing boring, domestic things: auto insurance, new shower curtain, dog food, housecleaning.
We took a break in the middle of the afternoon and tried to get a little sun. It was hotter than hell, and being in the pool was lovely. Too bad we had to trek across town to the pool.... We'll be getting one soon!
Tomorrow, there will be shrubberies purchased, I'm guessing.

Coffee and Krispy Kreme donuts are heavenly first thing in the morning. And it's payday. Whoohoo!

Brad is getting rather more sassy than usual on his Daily Brad page. I like it.
Well, I made it to the gym, but only after psychologically beating myself up. I went in to Bally's hoping to get a trial membership, but succeeded only in getting the hard sell from the general manager. Why do health clubs have to be so heavy handed? This should be something people want to do, not something that has to be sold like a used car.
And I have a problem with a gym that plays advertisements over the gym soundsystem.

I'm headed to the gym tonight, for the first time in quite awhile. This should be interesting.
And it's Thursday.... Must be time for a cocktail out afterward.
Jason has an interview this evening. I'm crossing my fingers.

I have not, did not, and will not watch "Survivor," but the gay guy won. How cool.

Drat! The fellow who owns logan.org decided to renew for another term. There go my plans.

Early Monday morning. Still a little tired from the weekend.
Wonderful dinner last night at Richardson's, one of Phoenix's better restaurants, with Bill and Jeff.
Tonight, I am joining (or at least trying) a gym.
Jason is still in Las Vegas.

Acquired a spiffy new Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse this afternoon. Annoying cords begone! The purchase was necessitated when the previous, cord-bearing versions were inadvertently doused with orange juice this morning. (I can justify any purchase.)
Yesterday I channelled domestic energy: cleaned, shopped, drilled holes in walls, decorated. I'm pleasantly surprised how the possibility of home ownership changes my priorities ever so much.
Dancing last night. A new DJ (Marky? Mikey?) at Crowbar who has loads of potential. A great ear for fun, dancable stuff al la Susan Morabito, and he knew how to work the turntables pretty well. He needs to update his collection a little: some of the moments with the highest energy were wasted on last year's hits. And he did fall into the Phoenix trap of spinning his entire record collection: house, breakbeat, trance, deep house, etc. etc. etc.
Breakfast this morning, and thence? A little shopping, perhaps.

Gore gets a little bounce over Dubya. As dull as Gore is, I sincerely hope we're not subjected to four years of daddy's little boy. Hopefully the pointy-headed Republicans who engaged in Clinton-smearing earlier in the week have realized that being petty will only help Mr. Gore, IMHO.

Oh, very very bad. This place is obsessed with Krispy Kreme donuts. Another one just landed on my desk.
Love that Arizona summer. Monsoon rains last night. Beautiful lightning and thunder. Buckets of water showered on our house.
The power went out. Twice. Which wouldn't normally be a big deal. However, when the power came back on the first time, the air conditioner did not. So we slept in our hot house all night. Thankfully the air conditioner reset this morning, so we're cool again.

Not only do we have the unrealistic website expectations discussed yesterday, now I seem to have started an entire redesign of our existing website. Whoohoo!

Yesterday, I made my first purchase of a major appliance: a brand-new, shiny stacked washer/dryer unit. Whoo. No more treking across town to the laundromat.
Today, we met with a mortgage lender, to kick off the whole process of getting a loan. It's shocking who they'll give loans to (i.e., me). I thought I was doomed considering the shaky state of my post-college finances. But it sounds like we're pre-pre-approved for a big chunk of change. We may have a pool before we know it....

Hoooboy. My boss wants us to put together a full e-commerce site, including shopping, database driven content, etc. etc. etc. with one web developer on staff, working from a one-page sheet of requirements. I think I need a martini.

Life has been busy, and my slow net connection at home has been keeping me from staying online much. Plus, the hot weather just makes me want to lay around the house in my boxer shorts.

Our landlord is here mowing the lawn. That's nice.
Jason is off with his little brother and little brother's girlfriend. They're nice.
Laundry for days languishing in the closet. Not so nice.
Dancing last night at Boom. Local DJ Timmy again. It was nice.
Assembled a hellishly complex Danish filing cabinet this afternoon. Smacked my finger with a hammer and now have an ugly looking blood blister. Urk. There must be a charming little circle of hell reserved just for designers of Scandinavian furniture. Not so nice. (But the cabinet looks good, fully assembled.)
Spicy Mexican food tonight with spicy friends. Also, margaritas. Nice.

Sigh. All the San Francisco boys are at Sundance this weekend, an outdoor danceparty at the Russian River. And we're here. Unpacking boxes. In 100+ degree heat. I love Arizona.

Made dinner for the first time in the new house last night. (Well, other than a PBJ sandwich.) It went pretty well, considering that I haven't really arranged the kitchen for cooking, and I was making the recipe up as I went along.
Friend Tom is turning 40 next week, and a herd of Phoenicians is now en route New York City and Fire Island for the celebration. I'm jealous. I think we're going to have Tom's birthday party in exile whilst they are away. They should be having a blast.... Susan Morabito's birthday party at the Pavilions on Fire Island. Grrrrr.
Of course, we all had a get together last night to send them off. Much merriment ensued, culminating in a few cocktails and a little Thursday night dancing. Oy.
I think I'm doing something quiet tonight. And unpacking boxes this weekend.

Bill Maher discusses the Republican National convention:
I needed a good laugh today. (I'm probably going straight to hell.) [Stolen from the excellent 37signals]
MAHER: Well, first of all, we were all shocked to see that many minorities, blind people, handicapped mountain climbers, Indian chiefs, gay people up there, I mean, it was hysterical. I mean, the first night, I couldn't -- it was just endless black people at Republican convention. It reminded me of the NBA -- all white people in the audience, all black people on the stage. I mean, the last time the Republicans had this many black people on the stage, they were selling them. I mean, John Rocker turned it off, and put on the WB network.
I needed a good laugh today. (I'm probably going straight to hell.) [Stolen from the excellent 37signals]
Wednesday. It might be a good day for sushi.

Dinner last night at a friend's house, eight of us enjoying grilled salmon and vegetables, and copious amounts of wine. We need to do dinner parties more often. The host is dashing off to NYC next week to celebrate his birthday. Lucky bastard.
Jason is driving back from San Francisco today and tomorrow. Hoorah! I miss the BF.

Ugh. Laundromats.
Breakfast this AM with friends. Then more unpacking. Damn, I need to find something else to do!
Oh, I guess there's laundry.

Oy. Slightly sunburned, slightly spun. Pool party was very fun, lotsa cute boys, of course. The host dug up some incredibly hunky bartender for the afternoon. I swear he was flexing his abs the entire time, just to prove he could. Local DJ Timmy provided the atmosphere, which was very cool. I wanna have a DJ at my parties when I grow up.
The party was slightly abbreviated because of a big storm. Lightning, you know.

The first lazy Saturday in the new house. Woke up, made coffee, and am just wandering around straightening up stuff. I'm still in love with the house.
I am not, however, in love with the little housewarming "present" the dog left for me this morning. I guess I need to pay attention when the dog is whining at the foot of the bed. He doesn't just miss me.

Today I had to do my part for a drug-free workplace... again. I took a drug test yesterday. Today, I was informed that I had to take the test over again because they couldn't read my results.
After doing my duty, the phlebotomist smiled at me and said "good luck!"
Good luck? Maybe she knows something I don't....

Well, the house is slowly taking shape. The office looks like an office. The kitchen now has a functioning refrigerator and stove. The living room is still a pile of crap. But we're getting there.
There is a sign on a construction project near my office that made me whoop with joy. The sign read: "Coming Soon! In-n-Out Burger!"
I can't wait.
I can't wait.

Our house has a little colony of geckos somewhere, since they flee into the bathroom occasionally when I walk down the hall. Preferable to roaches, certainly. Hopefully Oscar won't think them a delicious treat.
New job officially starts today. I'm gonna be good for awhile and stay off the internet, so not much posting, probably.
